Art Journaling 101

Open art journals are shown

Artist Lyssa Lovejoy will lead a five session class on Art Journaling 101 beginning Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Evansville Art Center. Remaining sessions will be held on February 3, 10, 24, and March 2 at the same time.

Creativity and Diversity Abound

Lyssa Lovejoy is a mid-career, full-time artist who works in many mediums in visual arts, primarily painting and drawing. She exhibits her arts in various venues and galleries all over the United States, teaches classes and workshops, and takes limited, specialized commissions. Evansville Arts Coalitions considers it a great privilege to host Art Journaling 101 at EAC with this gifted, personable artist!

In her own words, “I’m a believer art fuels art and that it is a forever type of school. I am not glued to any one medium or subject. I work with watercolor, chalk, oil sticks, and acrylics, among others. Working on multiple pieces while building a series allows me to create connections among them and is important for fluidity and creativity to not get stuck as an artist. This process allows me to leave space for what moves me at the moment.”

It's from this sense of creativity and play that she will direct the Art Journaling 101 sessions.

No Experience Required!

Art journaling often combines different techniques: Drawing, painting, writing, doodling, collaging, and sketching. Pages are about playing & exploring. They do not need to have a particular structure or composition or have a focal point or theme or be considered pretty. More importantly you do not need to be an artist.

In the class, Lyssa will take participants through all the creative exercises needed to create a stress-free, intuitive art journaling practice. As an artist that works with art therapy modalities, she will lead the class through exercises that will free you from your inner critic so you  can create and play in a no-judgment zone! This will NOT be art therapy, but she will help participants fearlessly conquer the blank page, gain insight into the deeper meaning of what is created, and uncover THEIR OWN unique style of intuitive art journaling.

There will be five creative, soulful lessons using a variety of different techniques that will help participants learn something new at each class to take with them.

Preregistration Required

Preregistration is required with a payment of $30. This class is for a minimum of 3 participants to a maximum of 10. Money will be refunded if class is cancelled. $7.00 for materials at the first class.

Things to Bring

Participants will need to bring the following:

1.   A multimedia book that can be found in the arts and craft section at Walmart, Target and even the Dollar Store. If you cannot find one, bring a notebook at no smaller than 5x7, it doesn’t matter if there is writing, or any type of print, it can have lines on it, or scribbles. We can use it. We also can provide what we have on hand.

2.  If you have crayons, makers, color pencils, pens. As we get into journaling, you will discover other objects to help create a beautiful journal.

3. Yourself. Open mind, willingness to be vulnerable within your journal.

Take some time for yourself this winter, gather some friends and learn the creative practice of Art Journaling with Lyssa Lovejoy at Evansville Art Center. Register today!
