Born in Louisiana & raised in Okoboji, Iowa, Derek grew up in a close family where music was always present. Despite being immersed in musical influences throughout his childhood, it would be later in life that Derek would start playing guitar and creating his own music. His father was his first and most significant influence as a blues guitarist himself, who played in blues/rock bands regionally.  His parents’ extensive collection of blues, rock and R&B music surrounded Derek with the musicians who were their influences, like Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, and BB King, to name a few.  “My dad had his amps, guitars, and equipment in the basement from when he used to perform and I’d go down there and that’s where I got started. My dad is still a major influence on my playing in every way. He’s the reason I even picked up a guitar. “

After playing live shows locally & gradually establishing himself on the music scene, a moment of opportunity came when Derek and Mato Nanji of national blues-rock band Indigenous & The Experience Hendrix Tour, played a show together.  Mato heard and saw his potential and took an interest in Derek’s developing career. Derek and Mato worked together to produce Derek’s EP, Ebb and the Flow, which showcases the diversity of Derek’s talent, not only in his guitar playing, but also his honey-and-sand textured vocals, and of his intuitive songwriting as well. The E.P features 3 time Grammy winning Brian Setzer drummer, Noah Levy & Grammy winning Jonny Lang bass player, Jim Anton. During a recording session, Mato invited Derek to join Indigenous & he toured with them from 2009 through 2014 .

After touring for 5 years with Mato, Derek has turned his attention back to his own career, currently recording new material for his next album, and continuing to perform live. Derek is coming into his own as an artist. What you hear is what you get. Passion, energy and soul are what this dynamic guitarist singer/songwriter brings to his live performances as he continues to evolve & grow musically.

There is no charge for this event. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:00 p.m. You may bring a treat to share at intermission if you wish. Beverages will be provided. Evansville Art Center is handicap accessible.
